Complex Trauma

Complex trauma/PTSD:

Trauma means that an individual has experienced, witnessed, or been confronted with an event or events that involve actual or threatened death or injury or a threat to the physical integrity of others. 

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is characterized by repeated, disturbing memories of traumatic events that shook the soul. People affected can remember these events, having nightmares, and avoid anything that reminds them of the event.

Experiencing or seeing a traumatic event that threatens death or serious injury can affect a person long after the experience passed. Great fear, powerlessness, or a frightening experience during the traumatic event can trouble a person. 

Events that can cause interfering with post-traumatic stress include can include in connection with the war, experience or see physical violence or sex hit by disasters, both natural (eg, hurricanes) or man-made (eg, severe automobile accidents). PTSD affects at least 8% of people sometime during their life, including childhood.

In PTSD, people experience the frequency, cause unwanted memories of the traumatic event again. Nightmares are common. Sometimes life events as if it happened again (flashbacks). Great disruption often occurs when people are dealing with events or circumstances that remind them of the traumatic origin.


We can summaries the main symptoms of PTSD in five areas as shown below:


(a)Cognitive symptoms


For examples, a person might take a long time to get to sleep, or cannot stop thinking about the trauma he was exposed to, or feels everything around him is not safe..etc


(b)Emotional symptoms


For examples, a person might have a feeling alone, suffering from nightmares, easily getting tense and nervous, feeling sad and fearful ..etc


(c) Psycho-somatic symptoms


For examples, headaches, stomach-ache, hypochondriasis, somatisation..etc


(d) Social behavioural problems


For examples, a person might have aggressive and rude behaviour, rejecting parent’s or community authority, having difficulty enjoying activities and hobbies..etc


(e) Dysfunction in productive performance


(e.g., difficulty in concentrating on study, increasingly bad academic performance, difficulties in paying attention during lessons/lectures, disruptive behaviour at school/University/workplace..etc
