About SPA
Definition
Sustainable psychotherapy Approach(SPA) is an advanced integral system of skills, techniques and activities that the psychotherapist uses with their clients/patients with the aim of enhancing and developing concepts and applications of self-care for them, improving the image of themselves in the past, present and future. To enable them to understand and solve their problems by themselves as much as possible and help them towards reducing symptoms to satisfy them. Also, to empower them with essential skills to improve life functions, thinking, feelings, physical sensations, and positive behaviours for them and their social environment for a long period of time, and to use the skills learned from the therapeutic journey as a way of life (Altawil, 2020).
Aims
SPA has three main aims to achieve: * To reduce the symptoms of mental health problems * To improve life functioning for the clients * To empower clients with essential life skills to cope with difficulties, stress and painful experiences * To improve the quality of life by themselves through using and developing the skills which they learn from the therapeutic journey as a new way of their life.
Methods
SPA was developed based on various techniques such as attachment, combination of person-centred and therapist centred, breathing, systemic, psychodynamic, psychoeducation, direct and indirect, verbal and non-verbal, multi-sensory, integration, body and movement, and breathing. The first 3 to 5 sessions are grounding and psychoeducational. The second part of this approach is developed with techniques to work with any painful experience called TBA-MDR : -T means using tapping to stimulate the left and right brains during working inside the painful experience. -B Means using body sensation, body memory and breathing to help the client to reconnect and open up their pain experience. The breathing is very powerful to reduce the stress and adrenaline in the body which can allow a good space to work throughout the painful experiences. -A means activating acceptance and attachment with the client system and their wider system such as their families, homeland, friends, work etc. This can activate support and some resources for the client during their difficult times. -M means focusing on mind (cognitive memory) and movement, it is useful to shake the challenges, traumas, stress, painful experiences in their cognitive memory as preparation to reprocess their bad and painful experiences. -D means Desensitisation, Dynamic, Disassociation, and Distancing. It is useful to help the client to not feel overwhelmed or upset when they remember their painful experiences. Also, to work on the issue of consciousness and unconsciousness and explain these issues to the client. It is important to make any triggers of the painful experiences or traumas non-effective. It is vital to use the language of disassociation and distancing in order to split the painful experience and their feelings into smaller parts. -R means reprocessing and resilience. To rebuild and heal the painful wound, it requires the use of resilience exercises in an experiential way to help the client to overcome their problem in a resilient way.
Sessions
- For simple cases and mild painful experience or trauma they need about 6 sessions.
- For difficult cases and moderate painful experience or trauma they need about 12 sessions.
- For complex cases and severe painful experiences or trauma they need about 18 to 24 sessions. There may be some who have had such long painful experiences, they might need additional sessions.
Rationale
Why was SPA developed? To find a cure to as many mental health problems and painful experience as possible, in order to help clients to achieve quick and effective recovery. In addition to allow clients to deal with their unfinished and painful experience in a gentle way. SPA can support the clients to enjoy the recovery and use some of these techniques for any problems they encounter in the future.
Success
SPA was developed by Dr M. Altawil after 20 years of working in the field of mental health. SPA was developed to be used with different ages and mental health problems. Research
SPA has been clinically tested in the English and Arabic languages for over two years on more than 368 clients in the UK and other countries, the first phase of the trial found that the success of recovery and the follow up research for these clients has reached up to more than 90% for clients aged from 7 years to 87 years. SPA was working successfully with several painful experiences and helped many of these clients to reach effective and sustainable recovery for the rest of their lives. This a satisfactory indicator to keep SPS developed and tested on more clients.
